OVERVIEW
Leggett & Platt’s corporate homepage was no longer representative of the company’s structure or priorities. Branding and assets were badly in need of updating, and the site’s accessibility and responsiveness were essentially absent. Our team was tasked with bringing the site up to date and up to par with L&P’s corporate peers.

The site before redesign

MY ROLE
Leggett & Platt’s corporate homepage was no longer representative of the company’s structure or priorities. Branding and assets were badly in need of updating, and the site’s accessibility and responsiveness were essentially absent. Our team was tasked with bringing the site up to date and up to par with L&P’s corporate peers.
COMING TO A SOLUTION
Our web team manager and I met repeatedly with L&P’s management team to determine how best to present the company’s updated presentation structure and brand identity. I spent time researching peer sites and competitors and discussed with the L&P management team what features they wanted to prioritize including in the redesign. Iteratively, I presented wireframes and mockups for approval and adjustment.

Part of the brand guide created for Leggett.

THE SOLVE
Through this project we were able to create a standardized brand identity for L&P on the web, as well as adopting a presentation for the company that matched their goals moving forward. Users were now able to navigate the site more easily and calls to action were more clearly marked to facilitate customer interaction with the company.

CHALLENGES
Leggett & Platt is a very large company with over 19,000
employees and business interests in multiple fields. Our biggest challenge was to effectively represent the hierarchy that existed internally in the company to outsiders or potential customers, as well as providing useful functionality for existing employees and partners. Working with the L&P management team, we iterated through several ideas about divisional hierarchy before ending on what exists currently.

THE EFFECTS
The site after redesign was now an accurate representation of Leggett & Platt’s business organization and goals. It included up- to-date improvements in accessibility and responsiveness that meant any user who desired could experience the site.
LESSONS
For me, this was the first project I spearheaded that involved such a large group of project owners and targeted such a large audience. I learned to concisely present my ideas and opinions to a large group and give evidence to back up any areas where we differed in opinion.
